College Basketball's Tarnished Twenty...

iowa_state

Iowa State

The Iowa State Cyclones took the Big XII by storm this year. They've knocked down 14 conference wins, good enough for the Big XII regular-season title. The Cyclones are certainly turning heads, but unfortunately some of those heads belong to NCAA investigators. The officials aren't hanging around Ames to celebrate Iowa State's sweep through the Big XII Tournament; they're busy looking into possible recruiting violations involving former juco star Ernest Brown.

Brown was already the object of some alleged dirty dealings by Mesa Community College coach Joedy Gardner, who may have tried to foil Brown's transfer plans by pressuring teachers to give him failing grades. Iowa State officials stand behind Coach Larry Eustachy and his staff, confident that the inquiry will reveal no violations, but the NCAA will have the final word on that. In the meantime, Eustachy is probably celebrating all those wins and quickly forgetting about transfer Travis Spivey's summer arrest for the alleged sexual assault of two teenagers. Spivey pleaded guilty to a statutory rape charge in September and was recently sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay $1,775 in fines and court costs. He also has to register as a sex offender. Spivey may be playing b-ball again soon, though, thanks to San Jose State coach Steve Barnes, who helped Spivey land a scholarship to Salt Lake City Community College.
