College Basketball's Tarnished Twenty...

Purdue

The Purdue Boilermakers were one of the many Big Ten powerhouses who fell victim to surprise upsets in the conference tournament. The Boilers lost to Wisconsin in the second round, but, with a 22 ranking at the end of the regular season, they'll still be dancing this spring -- and paying for it. Thanks to former assistant coach Frank Kendrick, who allegedly pulled strings to get improper financial assistance for former players Luther Clay and Porter Roberts, Purdue will pay an $80,000 NCAA penalty and forfeit all 24 games in which Clay played during the 1995-96 season. The jury is still out on whether the Boilers will lose their 1996 Big Ten championship. Kendrick is also still in limbo. He's got a job for now, but the school is keeping him far away from the basketball team as the Boilers prepare for the NCAA Tournament.
