College Basketball's Tarnished Twenty...

unc

University of North Carolina

The North Carolina Tar Heels finished a rough season with an even rougher 76-90 rout at Duke's hothouse, Cameron Indoor Stadium. The unranked Heels fell to Wake Forest in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Not a very impressive finale for senior point guard and ACC assist leader Ed Cota, who started his college career on a Final Four team with Coach Dean Smith, All-American Antawn Jamison, and "Air Canada," Vince Carter. To top off his troubles, Cota and teammate Terrence Newby are headed to court sometime soon to deal with assault charges left over from a fight last Halloween. After several rounds of mediation, the players and their lawyers failed to reach an agreement with the other brawlers. The whole gang was scheduled for trial on February 24, but the court date was postponed because of a backlog at the prosecutor's office. Both guards will be suiting up for the NCAA Tournament and playing until their number comes up, since the Heels' prayers for a bubble berth were answered with a Number 8 seed. Assistant coach Phil Ford will join them for the Tourney but is still barred from recruiting activities after a September DUI arrest.
