College Basketball's
Tarnished Twenty...
University of Memphis
The Memphis Tigers redeemed themselves and their dismal season with a five-game winning romp.
They taught Tulane a thing or two and brought home a 77-49 win, then beat South Florida 60-58
before dropping out of the C-USA tournament with a loss to DePaul. The late-season wins brought
the Tigers to a 15-16 record, which isn't bad for a team that lost its coach to a nasty scandal
during the preseason. Coach Tic Price resigned without comment in November after the university
received an anonymous tip that Price had assaulted his alleged mistress, a 23-year-old student.
While the school tried to piece together the mystery of Price's illicit extracurricular encounters
by tracing the 1,200-plus phone calls that showed up on last year's cell phone and calling card
records, interim coach Johnny Jones did his best to pick up the pieces of Price's abandoned team. The Tigers may be in for a bright future, though, as John Calipari recently committed to take over as head coach. The current assistant for the Phildelphia 76ers --and former head coach of the New Jersey Nets and the UMass Minuteman-- signed for four years in Memphis at $4.75 million.
