College Basketball's Tarnished Twenty...

University of California, Santa Barbara

UC Santa Barbara players Larry Bell and Eric Hare will be doing hard time this spring for their fraudulent use of a calling card. After entering no contest pleas, the boys will serve 15-day jail terms and shell out $1,125 each in fines. Then they'll be tied to a probation officer for three years while they make restitution for the $3,000 bill they rang up on another student's calling card. Both players already rode the bench for eight games after their November arrests. Bell was reinstated in January and has been helping out on the court with 5.1 points and 5.3 assists per game. Hare left the Gauchos for Montana, but he'll be back in town soon to take care of that jail sentence. His former team finished up with another late-season run this year to bring home a 10-6 conference record, but a 78-85 loss to Nevada on March 9 kept this season's division title out of the Gauchos' reach.
